How I Examine an Antique Silver Pocket Watch
Updated: 3 days ago
A real Victorian Pocket Watch explained

This late-Victorian silver pocket watch, which I purchased from a client in Sussex, is a good example of what I look for when examining an old watch. From the dial and overall condition to the silver hallmarks hidden inside the case, here's how I examine it, step by step.
What I Look For on the Outside
1. The Dial & Inscription
I start with the white enamel dial, checking the Roman numerals, the words “Improved Patent”, and any signs of cracks, chips or previous repairs.
2. The Hands & Seconds Dial
Next, I examine the hands and the small seconds dial at 6 o'clock, looking for damage, wear or signs that parts may have been replaced.
3. The Case & Overall Condition
I check the silver case, bow, hinges and winding fittings for dents, wear, damage and repairs. The overall condition is an important part of my assessment.

What The Hallmarks Reveal
4. The Swiss Silver Hallmarks
Inside the case back, I look for official hallmarks. This watch has bear-shaped marks consistent with historical Swiss silver hallmarking, which help establish the origin of the silver case.
5. The Silver Purity
The case appears to carry a 935 silver mark, indicating 93.5% silver - slightly higher than British sterling silver at 92.5%. This higher silver standard was commonly used on Swiss watch cases intended for the British market.
6. The Case Marks & Numbers
I also examine the stamped letters and numbers, including 241 and 718 on this example. These may relate to case manufacture or identification, but they don't automatically tell me the watch's exact age.

What Is This Pocket Watch Worth?
An antique pocket watch isn't necessarily valued by its silver content alone. I consider the watch as a complete antique, including its age, condition, construction, movement and potential collector interest. Sometimes the watch itself is worth more than the silver in its case.
