One antique that has always fascinated me is beautifully made furniture. The 19th century Swiss Black Forest bear bench shown above is one of my personal favourites. The amount of hand craftsmanship involved is extraordinary, from the detailed carving to the quality of the timber itself. Pieces like this were created by skilled craftsmen using techniques that have often disappeared from modern furniture making.

Sadly, fashions change. Many wonderful antique pieces that would once have been treasured now sell for a fraction of what they deserved only a generation ago. It's something I genuinely find quite sad because the quality, materials and workmanship remain every bit as impressive today as when they were first made.

While I no longer buy large quantities of antique furniture because transporting, storing and delivering it has become increasingly difficult, I still greatly admire it and I'm always happy to offer honest advice if someone asks me about a piece they own. I still actively purchase unusual, high-quality and interesting pieces of furniture.

Although precious metals now form a large part of my business, I continue to purchase a wide variety of antiques and collectables throughout Sussex.

More Than Thirty Years Buying Antiques Across Sussex

Although much of my business today revolves around gold, silver and jewellery, antiques remain the part of the job I enjoy most. Every valuation is an opportunity to discover something different. Sometimes it's a modest family heirloom, sometimes it's an exceptional piece of glass, a painting or an object that hasn't seen daylight for decades. That variety is one of the reasons I still enjoy doing this after more than thirty years.

Over the years I've been fortunate enough to handle everything from modest family heirlooms to exceptional private collections. Every item deserves the same careful attention. I always take the time to identify pieces, explain how they're valued and answer any questions before discussing whether selling is the right decision for you.

Have You Inherited Antiques?

Many of the people I visit have recently inherited antiques. It's very common to feel unsure where to begin. I'm always happy to provide a free professional valuation and honest advice. Even if you decide not to sell, you'll leave with a much clearer understanding of what you own.
