Old Silver? Don't Polish It Before I See It

Set beneath the South Downs near Cissbury Ring and Nepcote Green, Findon is a historic West Sussex village with strong connections to the surrounding downland.

If you have gold, silver, jewellery, coins or antiques you'd like valued, I offer free private home visits throughout Findon (BN14) and the surrounding area.

There is no need to take valuable or inherited items from shop to shop. I can come to you, examine everything privately in your home and explain what you have before making a clear, no-obligation offer.

Prefer to visit me? Free private appointments are also available at my Haywards Heath office, by prior arrangement.

Tarnished Doesn't Mean Worthless

Set of Six Solid Cast 800 Grade Silver Knives

Set of six antique solid cast 800 grade silver knives with ornate handles, purchased during a home visit in Sussex.

A matching set of six solid cast 800 grade silver knives featuring decorative floral handles and natural tarnish, acquired during a private home valuation in Sussex.

Old silver doesn't need to be shiny to be valuable.

These six knives are a good example. When assessing old cutlery, I look beyond tarnish and examine the marks, silver grade, weight, construction and condition to establish exactly what I'm looking at.

So if you've discovered old cutlery or silverware in a drawer, don't polish it and don't worry about identifying it yourself. Show it to me as it is.

The tiny marks may tell us far more than the shine ever could.

What Can Silver Hallmarks Tell You?

British Sterling Silver Hallmarks Explained

A detailed macro photograph showing traditional British sterling silver hallmarks, numbered to help explain the individual marks.

Macro close-up of British sterling silver hallmarks marked with numbered boxes showing a date letter, assay office mark, lion passant and sponsor's mark.

Those tiny punches can reveal a surprising amount about a piece of silver.

1 — Date Letter: The date letter can help establish when an item was hallmarked.

2 — Assay Office Mark: This identifies the assay office responsible for testing and hallmarking the silver.

3 — Lion Passant: The lion passant is the traditional British mark indicating sterling silver — 92.5% pure silver.

4 — Sponsor's Mark: The initials identify the registered sponsor responsible for submitting the item for hallmarking. In this example, the visible initials are B&C.

You don't need to decode these marks yourself. During a valuation, I can examine them with you and explain what they tell us about your silver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer free home valuations in Findon?
Yes. I provide free, no-obligation home valuations throughout Findon (BN14) and the surrounding area.

Should I clean old silver before a valuation?
No. There is no need to polish or clean silver before showing it to me. Tarnish doesn't prevent me from examining the item, its hallmarks or its condition.

How can I tell if something is solid silver or silver plated?
Hallmarks and other marks can provide important clues, but they can be tiny or worn. If you're unsure, simply include the item and I'll examine it for you.

Do you buy inherited jewellery and antiques?
Yes. I'm happy to look through inherited collections containing gold, silver, jewellery, coins, watches, antiques and collectables, even if you don't know what's valuable.

Do I have to sell after the valuation?
No. My home valuations are free and without obligation. If you decide to accept my offer, payment can be made immediately by secure bank transfer.
