Inherited Jewellery, Gold & Silver Valuations Across Sussex

Introduction

Sorting through an inherited property or helping a family member downsize can feel overwhelming. Jewellery boxes, drawers and cupboards often contain valuable jewellery, silver, gold coins, sovereigns and small antiques that have not been examined for many years.

With over 30 years of experience buying antiques and precious metals throughout Sussex, I provide professional home valuations to help families understand exactly what they have before anything is sold, donated or cleared. If you decide to sell, I offer fair market prices with immediate payment by secure bank transfer.

Why Clients Contact Me Before Arranging a House Clearance

Before a property is cleared, it is worth making sure valuable items have not been overlooked. House clearance companies provide an important service, but their focus is clearing household contents efficiently. They are not specialist jewellery buyers, precious metal buyers or antique dealers. A short visit beforehand can often identify items with significant collector, antique or precious metal value before they accidentally leave the property. Many of my clients are surprised to discover that items they assumed had little value are actually worth considerably more than expected.

A family from Surrey contacted me after discovering a mixed collection of inherited jewellery, gold and antiques. They wanted to understand exactly what the collection contained before deciding what to do with it.

A Recent Example

The collection included:

• A 19th-century silver and mother-of-pearl fruit knife

• A heavy 9ct gold classic link chain bracelet

• A 20th-century 9ct gold ladies' wristwatch

• A high-grade 19th-century 18ct gold ladies' pocket watch with a white enamel dial

• A selection of gold earrings, rings, and vintage jewellery pieces

• Solid silver commemorative medals and collectible silver spoons

Much of the collection had been stored together in a single box for many years, illustrating how valuable items can remain hidden until they are properly examined.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide formal HMRC probate valuations?

No. I provide independent market appraisals for families who wish to identify, understand and potentially sell inherited jewellery, gold, silver, coins, medals and antiques. I do not provide formal legal probate valuation reports for inheritance tax or estate administration.

Do I need to tidy the property first?

No. Please leave everything exactly as it is. Items are often found in drawers, jewellery boxes or cupboards, and I would rather see them in their original condition.

Should I clean jewellery or polish silver?

No. Cleaning can sometimes reduce collector value or damage antique finishes. Please leave everything exactly as you found it.

What if I don't know whether something is valuable?

That is extremely common. Valuable gold jewellery, sovereigns and silver are often overlooked, while costume jewellery is sometimes mistaken for having little value. Every item is individually examined, tested and assessed.

Is there any obligation to sell?

None whatsoever. Home valuations are free and there is absolutely no obligation to accept any offer.

How do you pay?

If you decide to sell, payment is normally made immediately by secure bank transfer together with a full receipt.
