Jewellery Can Be Valuable for Very Different Reasons
Pulborough has a character all of its own. Set around the River Arun, with the historic St Mary’s Church overlooking the village and the landscape opening out towards Pulborough Brooks and the South Downs, it is an area where Sussex history and countryside are never very far away.

And one of the most important things I can explain during a valuation is that two pieces of jewellery that look equally valuable can be worth money for completely different reasons.
A simple gold chain may derive much of its value from its weight and gold purity. A ruby ring could need to be considered as a complete piece of jewellery. A diamond ring requires the stones as well as its precious-metal setting to be examined. Even an understated platinum wedding band can contain considerably more precious-metal value than its appearance might suggest.
That's why I don't believe in simply looking at a collection, weighing everything together and giving you one unexplained figure.

You May Know It's Valuable — But Do You Know Why?
Sometimes it's obvious that something deserves a closer look.
Perhaps you've inherited a beautiful gemstone ring, kept an old wedding band safely tucked away for years or have a gold chain you simply don't wear anymore.
Other times, the valuable piece can be the one you weren't expecting.
Hallmarks can reveal precious-metal purity. A stone may deserve closer examination. An apparently simple piece can contain a surprising amount of gold or platinum. Older jewellery may also have craftsmanship, design or market appeal that means it shouldn't automatically be treated purely for its metal content.
With more than 30 years of experience buying gold, silver, jewellery, watches, coins and antiques, my job isn't simply to tell you what I'll pay.
I want you to understand what you own and why it has value before you make any decision about selling it.

A Ring Can Be Worth More Than the Gold Holding It
A gold and ruby ring is a good example of why fine jewellery shouldn't automatically be valued simply by placing it on a scale.
The gold itself is important, of course, but with gemstone jewellery I also look at the piece as a whole. The stone, setting, condition, construction, age and overall desirability can all be relevant when determining whether a ring has value beyond its precious-metal content.
This ruby ring was purchased during a home visit in Sussex and demonstrates why I prefer to examine jewellery individually rather than treating everything as scrap gold.
Sometimes the precious metal represents most of an item's value. With another piece, the jewellery itself deserves much closer consideration.
I'll explain that distinction to you during the valuation, so you can understand how I've reached my offer rather than simply being given a number.
Sometimes the Gold Itself Is the Important Part
Not every piece of jewellery needs to be complicated to have value.
Gold chains are a perfect example. They may not contain diamonds or coloured gemstones, but a substantial chain can still represent considerable value simply because of the amount and purity of gold it contains.
During a valuation, I look for hallmarks, check the gold purity, examine the construction and accurately weigh the piece. I'll also consider whether the chain has additional value as a wearable piece of jewellery rather than automatically treating it purely for its gold content.
If a chain is broken, has a damaged clasp or hasn't been worn for decades, don't worry about repairing or cleaning it before showing it to me. I would much rather assess it exactly as it is.
9ct Gold Chain
A classic 9ct gold chain acquired during a recent home valuation appointment in Sussex, highlighting the enduring value and versatility of pre-owned gold necklaces. Gold chains are among the pieces I regularly purchase during home visits across Sussex. From lightweight necklaces to heavier curb, rope and link chains, each piece is examined individually so its purity, weight, condition and overall quality can be properly considered.
And don't assume a chain isn't worth showing me because it's tangled, broken or missing a clasp. If it's gold, it still has precious-metal value.
When Both the Stones and the Setting Matter
Diamond jewellery introduces another layer to the valuation.
With a ring such as the three-stone example below, simply calculating the value of the platinum would tell only part of the story.
The diamonds themselves need to be considered. When examining diamond jewellery, I look at factors including the size and quality of the stones, their cut, colour and clarity where these can be reasonably assessed, alongside the condition, construction and precious-metal content of the setting.
The important point is that I don't automatically assume the value of a diamond ring is simply the weight of the metal holding it together.

More Than Precious-Metal Weight
Three-stone rings, sometimes known as trilogy rings, have remained popular for generations and are traditionally associated with the past, present and future.
When a piece combines diamonds with platinum, both elements deserve proper attention. Platinum is itself a valuable precious metal, while the diamonds may contribute additional value depending on their individual characteristics.
That's why pieces like this are assessed as jewellery first.
If you've inherited a diamond ring and have no certificates, boxes or paperwork, that's not a problem. Please don't assume you need documentation before contacting me. I'm always happy to examine the piece itself and explain what I can establish during the valuation.
Plain Jewellery Shouldn't Be Overlooked Either
One of the easiest mistakes to make when sorting through an old jewellery box is concentrating on the pieces that look the most elaborate.
A large gemstone ring naturally attracts attention.
A plain wedding band may not.
But appearance alone tells you very little about precious-metal value.
Platinum is a particularly dense metal, which means even a relatively simple ring can have a reassuring weight when held in the hand. Older platinum jewellery may also carry hallmarks that help establish its purity and origin.
So if you're sorting through inherited or unwanted jewellery, my advice is simple:
Don't decide what's valuable before you've had it looked at.

Don't Underestimate a Simple Wedding Band
Plain wedding bands are easily overlooked because there are no gemstones or elaborate details to draw attention to them.
But with platinum, the precious metal itself can be the important part of the valuation.
I examine the hallmark where present, establish the precious-metal content and accurately weigh the ring before explaining its value. The same principle applies to platinum rings that are scratched, engraved or no longer wearable.
You don't need to polish them, remove engravings or have them repaired first. Just show me what you have.
Not Sure What You've Got? That's Completely Normal
You don't need to know whether something is 9ct, 18ct, platinum, silver or simply costume jewellery before arranging an appointment.
In fact, many collections contain a mixture.
There might be a valuable ring sitting alongside inexpensive jewellery, an unmarked chain that needs checking, a single earring without its partner or an old wedding band whose hallmark is too small to read without magnification.
I'm happy to sort through those items with you.
Anything that isn't of interest can simply be put to one side, while pieces that deserve closer examination can be identified and assessed properly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Selling Jewellery in Pulborough
How do you value a gold and ruby ring?
I start by looking at the ring as a complete piece rather than automatically valuing it for its gold weight alone. The gold purity and weight are important, but I'll also examine the ruby, its setting, the construction and condition of the ring, any hallmarks and whether the piece has additional jewellery or market value. Not every ruby will add substantial value, which is why I prefer to examine the actual piece rather than make assumptions from a photograph alone.
Is a diamond ring worth more than its platinum?
It certainly can be. With a platinum and diamond ring, the platinum itself has intrinsic precious-metal value, but the diamonds may contribute considerably more depending on their size and quality. That's why I assess diamond jewellery as a complete piece before considering its underlying metal value. If the diamonds warrant additional value, that will be reflected in my assessment rather than the ring simply being treated as scrap platinum.
I don't have certificates for my diamond jewellery. Does that matter?
No. Please don't worry if certificates, receipts or original boxes disappeared years ago. Many of the diamond rings I see during home visits across Sussex arrive without any paperwork at all. I can still examine the jewellery and explain what I can establish from the piece itself. If you do have certificates or original documentation, however, it's always worth showing them to me.
Is an old platinum wedding band worth selling?
Yes. Platinum is a valuable and particularly dense precious metal, so even a fairly plain wedding band can contain worthwhile intrinsic value. I will examine any hallmarks, establish the purity where possible and weigh the ring accurately before providing a valuation. Engravings, scratches and signs of wear don't mean you shouldn't show it to me. Please don't have an old wedding band polished, altered or repaired simply because you're thinking of selling it.
Is my broken 9ct gold chain still worth anything?
Yes. A broken clasp, damaged link or missing section doesn't remove the value of the gold that's still there. I'll establish the purity, accurately weigh the chain and also consider whether it has any additional value as a piece of jewellery. The same applies to broken bracelets, damaged rings and single earrings.
I've inherited a jewellery box but don't know what's gold. Can you sort through everything?
Absolutely — and this is a very common situation. You don't need to separate the gold from the silver, costume jewellery or plated items before I arrive. I'm happy to go through the collection with you, identify pieces that warrant closer examination and explain what I've found. Please don't throw something away simply because it isn't hallmarked or because you don't recognise it. I'd rather look at an item that turns out to have little value than have you accidentally overlook something important.
