Jewellery You No Longer Wear Could Still Be Valuable

From historic Portslade Village and St Nicolas Church to Portslade-by-Sea, Portslade has a character of its own between Brighton & Hove and Shoreham.

If you have gold, silver, jewellery, coins or antiques you'd like valued, I offer free private home visits throughout Portslade (BN41) and the surrounding area.

There is no need to carry valuable or inherited items around different shops. I can come to your home, examine what you have and provide a clear, no-obligation offer.

Gold Jewellery Isn't Valued on Appearance Alone

Classic White Gold Hinged Bangle

A slim polished hinged white gold bangle with a secure clasp, acquired during a private home valuation in Sussex.

A simple piece of jewellery can be more interesting than it first appears.

When assessing a gold bangle like this, I look at its hallmarks, gold purity, weight, construction and condition before providing a valuation.

White gold can also be difficult to distinguish from other white metals simply by looking at it, so don't worry if you're unsure what something is made from.

Bring it along or show it to me during your home valuation and I'll examine it for you.

Don't Overlook Smaller Silver Jewellery

Sterling Silver Station Necklace with Bead Details

Silver doesn't have to be heavy or antique to be worth showing me.

Fine chains, necklaces, bracelets and other smaller pieces can easily become forgotten at the bottom of a jewellery box. I look for silver marks, weight, condition and any additional value the piece may have.

Single items are welcome too — you don't need a large collection to arrange a valuation.

Found 925 on Your Silver? Here's What It Means

925 Sterling Silver Mark

A detailed macro photograph showing a 925 STERLING stamp and an additional lionshaped symbol, highlighted separately to help explain the markings found on silver.

Macro close-up of a 925 STERLING stamp and additional lion-shaped symbol, highlighted with numbered red boxes on a silver item examined in Sussex.

If you're sorting through old silver or jewellery at home, look closely for tiny numbers, words and symbols. They can provide important clues about what you have. The photograph above is a good example.

1 — 925 STERLING
The first red box highlights the 925 STERLING stamp. 925 means the metal is 92.5% silver, which is the standard fineness for sterling silver. You may find 925, STERLING, or both together on jewellery, trays and other silver items.

2 — The Additional Symbol
The second red box highlights the lion-shaped symbol beside the 925 STERLING stamp. Additional symbols can relate to the maker, manufacturer, origin or marking system used on a particular piece. They should not automatically be assumed to be part of a traditional British hallmark without examining the mark properly.

That's why it's useful to look at all the marks together, rather than relying on one symbol alone.

You don't need to identify them yourself. If you find marks you're unsure about, show me the item and I'll examine them during your valuation.
